Angry Chef

Sarah called the team together at the start of the shift. She needed teamwork after the last two nights had been a disaster. The restaurant was picking up bad reviews and the criticism was merited when the service had not been up to standard. Orders had been missed and customers had reported rudeness when there had been complaints made.

“I want us to treat tonight as a new start. Let’s forget about what has gone before and get things right from this moment on. We’ve all made mistakes, including me, so let’s put that behind us. It’s about what we do from this moment on that counts. Are you with me?”

“Yes, Chef,” was the universal response even if there was more enthusiasm from some than others.

Sarah allowed her eyes to scan the group as they responded. There were two obvious exceptions to the team. Young Chloe, a student who was in her last week, and Ethan who had been with the business from the start. A difficult lad when she bought the business, she had been told he was an important waiter to retain. The customers liked him and he was popular in the area. Yet the longer that went on, the less sure Sarah had become.

She had done some research on Ethan and had found out he had a past. A promising footballer in his youth, he had failed to make the grade. That had led to him going off the rails and skirting the edge of the law. Somehow, the restaurant had turned him around even if a family relation had got him the job. That was the truth of the matter. He was the former owner’s nephew and it had afforded him extra privileges.

Sarah regretted not bringing him into line earlier. It was her own fault for she had fallen for his charm. An attractive lad, he had the looks and physique to go with it, with those blue eyes and blonde hair only adding to the allure. She had fallen asleep on more than one occasion imagining that body snuggled up next to hers. Sarah would think about him again but this time as the bad boy that he was.

She allowed that thought to linger in her mind a little too long. She felt her face reddening and the heat going through it. She wafted her hand to cool herself and then went straight to work. The first customers were due in minutes and she had the final preparations to make. It would be a busy night, with more bookings than they had seen for a few weeks.

As she went about her business, she noticed the rest of the team around her. Even Chloe was straight to work and making sure every table was perfect. The assistant chefs were busy alongside her. Only Ethan had failed to find something to do. If she was not too busy in the kitchen, Sarah would deal with his attitude right then. Yet she couldn’t, for it would compromise the service and the restaurant was already playing catch up in too many ways.
